God NOTHING can be easy. It cant just be "you get to go home now, take your medicine." or like "You need to see our therapist once a week, make an appointment when you get home." Instead its "You have to go to this random address tomorrow and if you don't have a way to get there tough luck we'll call the cops"
redleaveshavefallen 18th Apr 2021, 6:02 PM
Nooooo my kid

I feel that feel when the medical person gives me a million pieces of paper with varying importance. Overwhelming. Kiiiimmmmm

i've never commented before despite keeping up with your work since drop-out but i just wanted to say i really like the effect of the nurse's speech bubble winding around the door in the 4th panel, to me it makes it feel like her voice is echoing. i also love the color scheme, very nice callback to the first few pages when kim is entering the ward. havent been to a psych ward but you do a good job at capturing the weird gloomy feeling of being in a hospital.

the fact that kim has to go see a therapist everyday or else have the police show up sounds fucking horrifying, i was a bit surprised by that. it feels like she's just moreso being intimidated out of trying again when they didnt help her with the root of her problem
Guest 18th Apr 2021, 6:46 PM
oh i love the colors on this page. they are reminiscent of the ones on pages 4 & 5 while at the same time the more prominent usage of the blue and purple hues to the green make it look even more lovely. i know your own feelings on how your art style has changed is complicated and your feelings on your own art will be far more important than mine, but from my own perspective from the audience i love this page because it really kind of shows how your changes in drawing style and placement of color have grown to be so striking and good in a way that (from a personal perspective) is particularly appealing. characters and colors really pop while being so cohesive at the same time.

i also really like seeing the view down the hallway and how much i remember that particular waiting room kim thought was creepy and that ominous red glowing door lock.... very apt book ends between these setpieces, this nurse, and all the paperwork she is handing off to kim. also that "if you believe my explanations were adequate...", the way she's calling back to her and kim's first meeting over the papers. what an asshole indeed.
prettypinkpansy 18th Apr 2021, 7:01 PM
lol she's being so fucking passive aggressive because of how kim complained about her not explaining jack shit to her at the start, as if that wasn't a completely reasonable reaction for anyone to have. how predictable that she'd hold a grudge

love the hair textures on this page as well, the lighting in general is just really stellar, favorite panel is kim staring at the window
Zuzi 18th Apr 2021, 8:49 PM
Is there a reason that Dr. Fink and this nurse are both birds? That close up panel of the nurse's face seems like a pretty obvious callback to the close ups we've had of Dr. Fink's, so I was wondering if them both being birds was on purpose or if it was more the fact that they're shitty, uncaring medical professionals.

hi, zuzi. it's probably just coincidence. i tend to give characters i dislike traits i don't like to draw, and beaks happen to drive me up a wall to draw.
Fallingfeather 18th Apr 2021, 9:39 PM
Ah, and of course it was the nurse she met when first coming in here. And I suppose this is that "final test" of whether or not she's going to follow the rules here. Shrug and sign the paper, or refuse like she did the first time.

The bookends with this page using a palette that harkens back to earlier is so *chefs kiss* Also gosh huh, even the exit, the medical system piles on shit... I can see why Kim has all the sweat drops she does.

This nurse was originally leaning over Kim and physically intimidating her into signing the first release form. On their final interaction, she's kneeling on the floor at eye level to her. It's an interesting contrast that serves as a nice bookend to this story.

Geez, how many heavy locked doors do they have to get through to leave this building?
junie 19th Apr 2021, 1:07 AM
im not sure how to describe it but the kneeling to get on kim's level is fucked up. like the staff spends the entire comic talking down to her looking down on her and treating her like shit generally but the first time someone (other than a patient) actually "comes down to her level" (metaphorically or literally) is when theyre getting rid of her and charging money from her. Idk it just seems really transparently condescending on the nurse's part to me
Guest 19th Apr 2021, 6:28 AM
do some wards actually mandate this stuff? ive been only once, years ago, and they sent me home with literally like nothing except for a prescription that i never bothered getting filled. i dont even think they had me sign anything on my way out.
nova 20th Apr 2021, 9:13 PM
only been to inpatient once but this was exactly how it went. i had to attend outpatient and when i didnt show up they did in fact call the police to coke to my home and intimidate me into going
Peach 19th Apr 2021, 7:35 AM
I really love the callback to the opening segment when Kim was entering the hospital! And talk about information overload AGAIN... Poor Kim x_x
eve 19th Apr 2021, 8:08 AM
NOOOOOOO its that dang release form again isn't it!!! I'm eagerly awaiting the next page to see if Kim could get away without signing it as one last middle finger to that nurse...
Besides that! This comic has been really great! I've really loved the color palettes and shading styles, and seeing how they changed but remained wonderful along the way. It really makes the comic feel alive and personal, which is nice for a story like this. Thank you for pouring so much time and effort into creating and sharing stories with us!
carmilla gang prez 19th Apr 2021, 10:26 AM
god its so weird to think this is literally almost it. wtf
and ahhh yes, the good ol "if we dont hear from you we're sending the cops to your home" trick, a fond memory.......
that aside i love the colors on this page, makes me weirdly nostalgic for way back when during the part where kim was just getting in. also i love her face on the 15th panel. the colors on the first two panels are really nice, too

"here's an information packet about your disorder"

That pisses me off more than anything on this page. Like, its this symbol of mental illness stigma, you have mental disorder, you get a pamplet. Get diagnosed with a chronic medical condition, they give you a set of classes on self care. When I was diagnosed with diabetes I took a a single class course on diabetes self care offered by the doctors office, was given a trifold pamphlet when diagnosed with depression myself.
mata 19th Apr 2021, 4:47 PM
whyy did it have to be the same fucking doctor.
Guest 19th Apr 2021, 5:13 PM
So, assuming this all didn't unfold during a break (summer) Kim has missed a ton of school, right? And it looks like she has to go to outpatient basically all day (10am - 5pm) everyday for an indefinite amount of time. Not saying that school is great, but the longer you're absent from your peer group the more of an outsider you look like to them. So on top of her probably having to do some sort of make up work down the line (evening classes? tutoring? summer school?), she's also That Kid who missed ton of school in the middle of the semester.

hi. this actually was during summer break. sugar also wouldn't be present if it wasn't a break in school; there's a short sketch comic somewhere where she mentions holding in a suicidal episode until finals are over. kim also mistakes her grade in school for being a junior when she'll be going back to school as a senior because she didn't plan to go back to school at all, to kind of help the reader along.
the selection of summer was because statistically, more people attempt suicide in summer rather than winter.
Guest 19th Apr 2021, 5:33 PM
Nice how the colors and scenario all come back together again.
mata 19th Apr 2021, 9:14 PM
also can i say your colors for this page are absolutely phenomenal. they usually are, but these ones i especially like. the teal lighting making kim's stripes purple is just very visually pleasing. how you pick your colors from scratch instead of using filters makes each scene feel very distinctive

not sure whether I should be more or less shocked about the paperwork. for the thousandth time I'm really thankful I avoided this (psychiatric institutionalization) somehow
still processing this comic is ending and everything since the journey began, but thank you for making this comic. it's been important on a lot of levels for me.
Neptune 20th Apr 2021, 9:50 PM
I love how much of a tone the background elements set, the splashes of colour and linework really punctuate the atmosphere in these last few pages. Also those close up face shots are just 👌 so good to look at.
Addiemallory 21st Apr 2021, 5:45 AM
Oh shit. This page is too... Honestly, scary and beautiful for me to express properly - but I did notice, isn't bayhealth out of state, according to sugar, but also a better facility? I wonder if this is another location by the same parent company, or if they're really making poor Kim get to and from that place daily out of state.... Oof
Guest 21st Apr 2021, 2:16 PM
i think frankie mentions bayhealth and then sugar responds implying that bayhealth didn't have the necessary equipment and Then frankie says sugar should have been sent out of state. i assume bayhealth is still in the same area.
Brookie.Mcdookie 21st Apr 2021, 8:37 AM
Is Kim lowkey based on your life experiences? I know you wrote a lot of yourself into Sugar.
Nobody 21st Apr 2021, 11:31 AM

hi brookie.
i think when i would say that i put part of my experience into a character, it is usually interpreted as "i make the character a self-insert, somewhat, and they think exactly what and how i think" when i've meant it more as "i actually do have Some authority speaking on this subject."
i've been pretty open that my own experiences with the psych ward i was at inspired this comic, though, so yes, in some ways. it was made less singular and personal with research about others' experiences in wards. kim's personality was based on what i thought would work well for the story while being an enjoyable and cathartic personality for a character of her race.
28 21st Apr 2021, 3:37 PM
Wow, what an amazingly effective way to inspire someone to make another attempt. Bring the shame and humiliation and sense of being a burden right on home with you...

I love panel 7 and 8 and how the window to freedom is reflecting in Kim's eyes right before the nurse smothers her in papers.
hope 22nd Apr 2021, 1:58 PM
the first 6 panels are chef kiss. the different angles of opening the doors and how the frame comes in closer as they travel through these labyrinthine hallways...all the callbacks to early in the comic. the release form thing, but now she's Actually being released...the final door out of here. it feels like a very bittersweet, out of the frying pan into the fire kind of situation.
and the green and red color palette combined with the green/red door opened or closed light. love that. i really like the line and shadework for the details of their hair here, as well. and as always, i appreciate the double meaning & misunderstanding happening here, kim saying she wishes this nurse would be gone by now, and the nurse taking it in a different & self focused direction. god. i know it wouldnt accomplish much, but i cant express how cathartic a big middle finger from kim right now would be to me, lol
mallory 22nd Apr 2021, 3:00 PM
The colors on this page are unbelievably good, it's really cool to see you returning to some earlier palettes' vibes with a renewed vision! also interesting to see a lot of old stuff brought back, like the "release form," and kim's blood test results indicating she is in fact, not pregnant and such. must be really disorienting for kim to be overloaded by this nonsense again.
Guest 27th Apr 2021, 4:35 AM
UGHHH IM JUST ABOUT TO READ THE LAST PAGE IM SO EXCITED. i reread the whole comic before getting to the next page!! god this whole page with all the callbacks is so genuis... the reference to signing a release form, the same nurse, "youre not pregnant", the red light turning green.. and of course the colors shapes and composition in this page are amazing. alright im ready to see the last page.. thank u for working so hard to create this wonderful comic!
